Step 1: Make a rich sugar solution
The sugar solution is very rich and is mostly liked by the humming birds. These sugar solutions are more refined and form nectar for the birds as they get in flowers. This sugar solution gives high energy to the birds during the summer, when there is no flower nectars during certain season.
You must avoid buying the nectar at the stores where the artificial nutrients are added. It will cost you money and needed to spend high, also the humming birds get any benefits in eating that artificially added food.
The Humming birds will get more of the nutrients only from natural flower nectar and the insects the sugar solution can give them a little bit of energy by giving them a cup of coffee or tea as we drink daily.
Step 2: Mix a solution of 1 part white, granulated sugar and 4 parts warm water
Take a small bowl with 1 part of refined sugar and 4 parts of warm water and stir the mixture until the sugar is completely dissolved. Cane sugar is a sucrose that gives more carbohydrate to the family. These sugar solutions are easily digested well and these give the humming birds the instant energy they help in flapping the wings faster.
Step 3: Boil the sugar water
Boiling the sugar water will destroy the bacteria from the food that occur and avoid spoiling of foods. Boiling the water will also help in destroying of any extra chlorine and increases the protein and make the little humming birds flap with energy.
If you do not boil the mixture, you will need to change the food every 1 to 2 days or else the bacteria may grow in the mixture that could harm the humming birds.
If you are cleaning the feeders daily then it is not necessary to boil the solution you can feed the small amount of food for immediate use.
Step 4: Do not add any dye to the food
Adding dye to the food may harm the humming bird. Though the humming birds are attracted towards the color red. Natural humming bird food nectar is clear, odorless and healthy there is no need to add dye to your homemade hummer bird food.
Step 5: Store the humming bird food until you are ready to use it
If you make a large batch of the food, you can keep the extra amount of food in the fridge until your humming feeder is empty. So you will save a lot of time and money when you store the food in the refrigerator.
Step 6: Pick the right feeder
Humming birds are attracted by the red color so it’s better to choose the red feeders. Red feeders are the best because the color red attracts hummingbirds. You can hang your feeder in any tree bushes or simply in the ground, or on the shady part if possible because the nectar will stay fresh longer when it is in the shade.
Hang your feeder in your garden if you have one or near a window but placed far out of the reach of cats to save the beautiful little birds.
